SCORE's "2014 Small Business Owner of the Year"
Selected from among the many small business clients that come to SCORE for business mentoring.Jamie Bohlin of Cape Cod Celebrations started her business in September of 2007. After working for Chatham Bars Inn for a year and a half, she knew the wedding industry was where she needed to be, but wanted to venture out on her own.
(Jamie Bohlin receiving SCORE's 2014 "Small Business Owner of the Year" Award from her SCORE Mentor, Marc Goldberg)
In the first year of Cape Cod Celebrations, Jamie had a full time job and booked 4 weddings, two of which were brides she had booked at CBI, but they wanted to have her on site to manage their wedding. For the first 4 years, she always had a full time job, as she was not sure if her business would be able to sustain a full time salary. From 2007-2011 she grew from 4 weddings a year to 10 events per year. In 2011, she decided to take on another senior planner on a contract basis, as she started to turn down business and did not want to give it away to the competition.
In 2012, she resigned her full time job and took a part time job in order to make more time for weddings and was able to book and execute 25 events between she and her senior planner. In June of 2013, she resigned her part time job and started doing weddings exclusively through Cape Cod Celebrations. She also took on another senior planner. Between the three of them; they executed 35 events in 2013. 2014 year-to-date, Cape Cod Celebrations has already booked 29 events and Jamie is looking to bring on another planner who can take on 10+ events per year. Bookings have already started for 2015. Cape Cod Celebrations has won many awards through popular websites like WeddingWire and The Knot. They also won the Best Wedding Planner on Cape Cod in 2013 through the Cape Cod A-List. The press page on their website has become something they are very proud of as well!
(Joy Jordan, editor of Cape & Plymouth Business magazine, honors Jamie Bohlin by featuring her story "Wedded to Success" as the cover story for their June 2014 issues)
Jamie attended the SCORE 6 week "Successful Small Business Management" workshops at the 4C’s to help her supplement her event planning expertise with business skills to more effectively manage the growth of Cape Cod Celebrations. Cape Cod Celebrations uses a basic marketing strategy that has used almost exclusively on-line channels, with a few exceptions. Jamie works hard to get their weddings posted on popular wedding blogs like Style Me Pretty. They also rely on word of mouth and referrals from very satisfied customers. In order to manage her business even smarter, she is currently enrolled in a 16 week entrepreneurs program in New Bedford, MA. She visits with her Mentors at SCORE monthly to review last steps and plan for next steps.
Jamie’s mother, Joan Gilbreth of the BARN & Co. gift store in Dennis, also won the Build a Better Mousetrap award in 2007. Guess it may run in the family!
